I talk to people all over the country, and in Texas.  It seems like most tracks are still 1/4 mile, and everyone compares their 1/4 mile times.  All of the tracks in our area are 1/8th mile now.  Only a couple of opportunities to run 1/4 mile within 200 miles of us.

Some track owners tell me they went with 1/8th mile because that is what the division finals are for NHRA, IHRA, etc.

Question is, What is the future bringing for us?  Sure makes it hard to set up a car.

1/8 mile is what most of us race. GREG or someone closer to track management can confirm this; event insurance is less for 1/8 mile vs. 1/4 mile. It is certainly less expensive on us racers with less fuel use, wear & tear, etc. Building a new facility would be much less if just for 1/8 mile racing. I personally like 1/8 mile better but if Dallas Raceway is racing 1/4 mile this year, I'll be back to racing 1/4 mile. I can and will do both. I have never ran my dragster 1/4 mile so if it doesn't like the big end rpm's, I'll turn on the t-stop.

To your question... The trend has been and continues to be toward more & more 1/8 mile bracket racing. Several years ago there were some of the big money races around the country still ran on the 1/4 mile format. Not many (if any) these days...

Insurance is less for 1/8th mile. Less parts breakage too, with fewer clean ups is another big plus.

We like the 1/8th, and our car is set up for 1/8th now.  No electronics and nitrous, so we need a gear change for 1/4.  No big deal, but don't want to change back and forth.  Thanks for the input.

NHRA Division Finals are not always 1/8mile. They swap each year, this year the NHRA finals is 1/4 mile. I like racing both. I did set my car up for Super Street and Hot Rod so I can run both 1/8 and 1/4.

AND FYI Dallas Raceway runs 1/8 mile on their bracket nights. Only do 1/4 on TNT nights.

We can run 1/8th on spray, and 1/4 without as the car sits now.

I'll guess we'll set up and run for however long the tracks are.  I'm just glad we still have some to go to.

Thanks Max.

By the way everyone.... If you need to get your "race on", Dallas Raceway is Bracket Racing tonight. I'd bet big money you'll see MadMax there. This could be (weather permitting) Max's first three race weekend of the year.

I'll see ya there later in the month.

Man I only wish that were true. I actually won't be there tonight. If I am lucky I will make it to Northstar tonight to test. I had mishaps with the new motor last weekend. Started leaking water from the heads and after some stud checks I looked at the oil and it was milky. Smelled like coolant and I started a mad dash for this past week to rebuild the back-up motor after freshening it over the winter. We got it finished and ready to fire last night about 1am so as soon as I get off work and to the house I will fire it off to break in the rings. Hope nothing leaks, change oil/filter, load the car and head to NSD to test(not holding my breath for it tonight though).

I will be at NSD tomorrow and I haven't figured out what to do about sunday(I wanted to run motorplex points especially with the new 1/8mile no/e...I can run 4 classes out there) but NSD rescheduled their Gold Card race for sunday and I will already be there saturday. First I have to have a working car though before I can worry about where to race!!!! 2010 Hasn't started out very well, atleast it can only get better from here right?? Roll Eyes

Right. And you can always catch up in Motorplex points. Nobody seems real committed to the full year down there so all you would need to do is be there the rest of the year...

Good Luck this afternoon & tonight.

I like to do both, 1/4 mile is what everybody judges your car by around here. So if I go around saying that my car does a 6.68 then I get some funny looks.

It doesn't matter to me either way.
I think I would prefer the 1/8th if I had a choice.

So, do you set up your gearing for the 1/4 mile if you run both?

Yes if there is a possibilty of running both. I have a friend with an 1/8th mile set up and it works great for 1/8th. But it will not run 1/4 without really spinning the heck out of it. 5.13 gears

Well, our Buick doesn't like the rpm's.  Guess we will have to go back to highway gears.
